Fledge
The Last BattleFledge is a great winged horse whose arrival at the golden gates brings an affectionate reunion with Digory Kirke and Polly Plummer. His brief appearance connects the company gathered in Aslan’s country with their earlier adventures and gives the final welcome a note of recognition and kinship.
Identity and Arrival
Fledge enters through the gateway as a horse so mighty and noble that even a Unicorn might feel shy in his presence. His wings distinguish him from the other horses gathered there, while the narration presents his stature as an immediate impression on those already inside.
Reunion with Digory and Polly
On seeing Digory and Polly, Fledge greets them as cousins. They answer with delight, calling him their good old friend and rushing to kiss him. Their response makes clear that this is not a first meeting but the renewal of an established bond; Fledge recognizes them at once, and they welcome him with unmistakable affection.
Earlier Bond and Narrative Role
Jewel recalls that King Erlian had given Fledge many bright apples when Fledge was a colt, an oblique reminder of his earlier life and connections. The recollection is quickly overtaken by Fledge’s arrival and reunion with Digory and Polly. In the larger gathering, his appearance is one of several recognitions that bring figures from different histories together at the gates, making the welcome feel like a restoration of old companionships.
